Where can I see an ayurvedic practitioner in Northern Ireland?
Northern Ireland's first ever Ayurveda centre has recently opened at Belfast's Ramada Hotel. The Omni Centre, provides a range of relaxation, detox and revitalising treatments and also a Ayurveda physician on site for consultation.
Omni's resident Ayurveda Practitioner Dr Umesh says that stressful busy living is a major cause of ill-health.
"In our day-to-day life we abuse our bodies and mind, suffer from work-related stress and do not take time to relax and eat properly. Because of our busy and stressful lifestyles, toxins build up in the body and disharmony sets in causing an imbalance of body, mind and soul. Disharmony often shows itself as illness and disease.
"Ayurveda medicine believes that the harmony of body, mind and soul is responsible for good health. It gives you a lifestyle to follow that will reinstate the balance - it may be a mix of exercise, diet, yoga, and massage, herbal supplements. Ayurveda believes that each person is different and for each person there will be a way of living that will keep the body healthy.
"Stress is the biggest problem. If we can manage stress then 65-70% of health problems wouldn't exist. We do treat many patients with a range of ailments and also a lot of people who suffer from stress. For someone suffering from stress, I would combine a range of relaxation therapies along with Yoga, which is the spiritual aspect of Ayurveda, and create a specific treatment package of lifestyle changes by putting together a programme of diet and exercise. But everyone is different so each individual treatment will suit the patient's dosha. It is a complete holistic approach to health. Sometimes small lifestyle changes make a big difference.
"We all have times when we recognise that we are out of balance. Sometimes people constantly feel tired and fatigued, suffer from headaches, have trouble sleeping but when they go to the doctor there is nothing wrong. What is actually occurring is that an imbalance has not yet been recognised," he said.
"When the body's natural defence system is low, disease and illness sets in because the harmony has been upset. Yoga is the spiritual aspect of ayurveda. We also tailor yoga packages to suit the needs of each individual and encourage them to practice at home for 20 minutes each day. Ayurvedic massage also relieves stress by using special oils with a fully body and scalp massage. Soothing warm herbal oil is also poured over your forehead before the scalp massage.
"People spend their lives being too busy. They need to find the time to help themselves, strike the balance and get their health back to harmony - the benefits are great. A good balance means you will have more energy and be more content and happy. This can only impact positively on family and work," he added.
So if you constantly feel tired, worn out, fatigued, stressed or suffer from aches and pains, Ayurveda therapy could provide the answer. It also provides vital clues leading to explanations for the need to balance food and diet in our daily living. It is a complete holistic lifestyle designed to maintain and promote health. The healing qualities of Ayurveda have been time tested and proven to be very effective.
