I have used both, strictly speaking I would say the kiss x4 is a little better, even though I'm a Nikon user myself. I find it amazing when taking photo at night.

But honestly speaking the difference may be so small that once you started shooting (instead of just playing with the camera), it's more or less the same.

You should try out both of them at a shop. I used to say Canon feels very bad in my hand, especially with the x2 and x3, but x4 is different, it feels very good.

Are you in Japan? Since you call it the kiss x4 instead of 550D or a rebel. Not sure about price there but over at where I live the kiss x4 does give a bit better value for money over the D90.

That said, Canon recently released the 7D which has a new 19-point, all cross-type, AF sensor that is a dramatic improvement in a camera that is specifically meant to compete with the D300s. The cameras are similarly priced and if you don't need a full-frame camera, the 7D is a serious challenger to the D300s in every respect. I just spent several weeks evaluating both cameras and thought seriously about switching to Nikon. I ultimately decided to stick with Canon for now and bought a 7D. I will admit the Nikon's AF is faster and tracks moving subjects better than the new Canon AF but, it really is not a big difference. It is however, significantly better than the old 9-point system found in the 5D, 5D Mark II, or any of the X0D cameras such as the 40D/50D.
